January in South Africa carries a familiar rhythm: fresh school uniforms, sharpened pencils and hopeful hearts preparing to send our children back into classrooms after the holiday break. Every new school year holds promise and, for too many families, a quiet but heavy concern.
In the past few weeks, national conversations, including coverage on eNCA’s Checkpoint this past Sunday, 18 January 2026, have reminded us that returning to school does not always feel safe for every child. Parents and caregivers from across the country shared their stories. Our family was one of four featured in the episode, documenting different experiences of harm within school environments. Our son’s story and the silencing and injustice that followed, were highlighted as part of a much bigger national reality. These conversations are not meant to frighten us, but to remind us that awareness is protection.
It is estimated that over three million learners in South Africa experience bullying each year, more than double the global average. Many of these children suffer quietly, unsure of where to turn or whether they will be believed.
For parents, this reality can feel overwhelming. We send our children into classrooms with hope and pride, trusting that schools are places of learning, friendship and growth. And yet, when behaviour that harms dignity is ignored or minimised, it chips away at the safety that every learner deserves.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Our children may not always tell us what is happening. Sometimes the signs are quiet:
• A reluctance to go to school
• Sudden changes in mood or appetite
• Withdrawal from friends or activities
• Unexplained stress or fear
These are not small behaviours- they are important signals that deserve our full attention. Listening carefully, observing without judgement and creating a space where children feel heard and supported is one of the strongest protective steps a parent can take.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
You Are Light exists because stories like these and experiences like ours, taught us a crucial truth: no child should navigate harm in silence. When we ignore the signs, we miss the chance to intervene early- not just to protect, but to heal and empower. That is the heart of our mission.
As we prepare for a national rollout of the Light Up My School campaign, this moment offers both reflection and resolve. We stand for:
• Early awareness and prevention
• Tools that equip caregivers and educators
• Cultures of respect and dignity in every classroom
A CALL TO LIGHT
If this blog finds you with worry or uncertainty in your heart, know this: you are not alone. Listen to your child. Notice what is changing. Ask questions that invite honesty, not fear. And when something does not feel right- trust your instincts.
We are building a movement that supports families, schools and communities to create spaces where every learner can thrive. There is power in awareness; there is strength in unity; there is light in every heart committed to care.
Together, we can make schools true places of learning and well‑being- not just for a fortunate few, but for every child in South Africa.
